Register capital, fee, strategy and a start date. The rules are replayed from that date to today and the result is shown as realised P&L, monthly performance, holdings and a trade log.
A backtest answers "what would this rule have returned". This page answers a narrower and more useful question: what has this rule been doing since the day I started watching it. Same engine, but anchored to your start date and your capital, and reported the way a statement is: realised P&L, month by month, and what is still open.
The two numbers separate on purpose. Realised P&L is money from tranches that have already been closed, after both fees. Unrealised is the mark-to-market on tranches still held, valued at the last close minus the sell fee. Split buying closes positions constantly, so realised usually dominates. When a month looks bad but realised barely moved, the loss is sitting in open tranches and has not been booked.
A total return tells you the endpoint. The monthly column tells you what the ride felt like, and whether you could have stayed in it. Next to each month is the same month for buy and hold, which is the honest comparison: not "did I make money" but "did the rule beat doing nothing".
